Title

National Investigative Interviewing [Tier 2]

Duration

5 days

Audience Law enforcement personnel who are dealing with serious and complex crime

Personnel / interviewers from other organisations who are dealing with investigations involving serious and complex crime.
Aim To develop existing interview skills in relation to interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, and therefore incorporates the cognitive model and the management of conversation model.
Overview The course content includes qualities of an interviewer, questioning style, memory, witness categories, and witness anonymity issues. All attending delegates are given the opportunity to apply the cognitive model in an interview setting.

Delegates will then move into the suspect phase of the course, which includes inferences from silence, Special Warnings and dealing with legal advisors. The course programme also includes how to deal with prepared statements, no comment interview, and TICs.

All attending delegates are given the opportunity to interview the suspect who is linked to their witness.

Title

National Investigative Interviewing [Tier 3]

Duration

10 days

Audience Personnel already accredited to Tier 2 interviewing standards who have been selected to perform Tier 3 interviews.
Aim To develop the skills and abilities of an investigator to interview suspects in major crime and complex volume / serious crime cases.
Overview This course covers the legislation, policy, law and procedures in respect of suspect interviewing.

Learners must be able to review and analyse the evidence when planning for interviews, review the antecedent history and assess the condition of the suspect.

Learners must evidence how to prepare detailed interviews, prepare and utilise resources according to legislation and document all decisions and actions in accordance with legislation and policy.

The trainers will explain the use of appropriate and ethical communication and how to evaluate the information obtained during interviews. Learners will take part in practise interviews and will conduct at least 3 before their final assessment interview. 
Learners will be expected to use the SE3R method of information processing to plan and prepare for suspect interviews at this level.
